Congressional illegal immigration legislation not supported by the public

Is there really any wonder why that is so?

Excerpt:

"The data is so compelling, one has to wonder why Congress hasn't realized that they could offer a win for everyone by focusing exclusively on border security as an entrée to immigration reform. They literally would please every possible constituency by doing so, and would almost overnight dial down the emotion over the rest of the issue. Only in DC could the governing class be so out of touch with the national mood."

Let's hope those wiser voices out there prevail.

  1. This recent poll says otherwise Bubba. http://www.nytimes.com/pages/todaysheadlines/

I believe most Americans are more pragmatic than you think. They realize that the government is not going to close the borders because it would pee Mexico off. A goodly chuck of their economy depends on the yankee dollars being sent home. At the same time they know that there ius no way to round up and deport 20 million people. So it behooves us to come up with some plan to "manage" the problem because it won't be solved. I bloggon on this the other day.

Bubba, you are a very intelligent person and yet you use other people's words to "apparently" back up your views. I say apparently because I'm also sure you don't toatally agree with ALL the views presented. I would really like to read a commentary written by you. This would let me into the thinking of Bubba. 2. Brenda, if the public actually KNEW what was really contained in the bill, the so-called "public support" would disappear faster than some newly discovered tax money in the hands of a liberal.

We tried the same crap in the 80s. It didn't work then, it won't work now.

The borders need to be closed, the money flow out of the US needs to be stopped, employers must comply with I9 regulations, social services need to be provided only to those who are here legally (save only for live saving medical care), "sanctuary" cities should be eliminated, those illegals who become involved with the legal system need to be sent home....the list goes on and on.

Yet almost ALL of our elected representatives want to take the easy way out by offering a program which does not really address the problems, but will surely INCREASE the problems in the future.

And, as Stone Cold says, THAT'S the Bottom Line!

  3. In addition, the Rasmussen Report (linked in the original post) says the NYT is wrong.

I don't trust very much that is printed in the NYT, for obvious reasons, which have been apparent on MANY occasions over the years.

  4. I remember too well what happened with the 1986 bill. That is why I don't think this is anything but smoke. I agree with you that we really MUST close our borders. Bubba our southern border is not porous it is an open highway. I have seen it from California to Brownsville, Tex and the immigrants walk across the river like they would walk across the street.

As for giving them no medical treatment except in a life or death situation, I can just see the liberals and the ACLU jumping on that one. In the meantime the only medical they get is from our hospital emergency rooms which is the most expensive and it is clogging the emergency services for people who really need it. This is my reason for wanting the Medicaid program to be opened up to them. This would also be a good place to catch and deport as is the jails.

There is also the problem with state governments like NC who claim they are needed and bend over backwards to make them welcome; like issuing driver's licenses. And blatantly ignoring the laws on the books.

I just don't believe the hard nosed law and order approach will work, but neither will this "camel" the Senators have cobbled together work either. And yes, the Hispanic population will grow larger and larger creating a permanent poverty level class and low wages pool of workers. Unfortunately unlike previous waves of immigrants to thsi country education is not considered a priority to the Hispanics so they will never get ahead as did the new generations of the former immigrants. Work is the main goal of the Hispanics. Get out of mandatory school as soon as possible and get a job. Perhaps the children born and raised in thsi country will look beyond the goals of their parents.

Something else I forsee in the future is a class struggle between Blacks and Hispanics that will make for a real crime wave on the order of the 1930's when prohibition brought out the thugs. It is happening a bit now but most Blacks and Hispanics are still accepting of each other.

Bad news all around. This is why I keep searching for a sane and doable solution. And, I believe the sane solutions will come from the states rather than from the federal government. Brenda

By the way, have you walked to our new Harris Teeters yet? Lew stopped by but I haven't yet. He says it is a nice store. I hate to see what happens at the intersection however. I believe that cities should require businesses to provide for increased traffic that their business puts on our streets before they are given a building permit. BB

  5. "By the way, have you walked to our new Harris Teeters yet?"

    Yes.

I've been walking on the premises for months now, and I've already shopped there several times.
    I actually like it.

Mrs. Bubba is a different story however. She vows never to set foot in any store in that development. I think that's an example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

She's pretty hard core. She makes me look like Mary Poppins in comparison.

Our liberal blogger buddies are lucky that she has no interest in blogging.
