Giuliani's the Man

He's the best choice for our new president in the 08 election.

Steven Malanga tells us why.

Excerpt:

"But in a GOP presidential field in which cultural and religious conservatives may find something to object to in every candidate who could really get nominated (and, more important, elected), Mr. Giuliani may be the most conservative candidate on a wide range of issues. Far from being a liberal, he ran New York with a conservative's priorities. Government exists above all to keep people safe in their homes and in the streets, he said, not to redistribute income, run a welfare state, or perform social engineering. The private economy, not government, creates opportunity, he argued; government should just deliver basic services well and then get out of the private sector's way. He denied that cities and their citizens were victims of vast forces outside their control, and he urged New Yorkers to take personal responsibility for their lives."

Giuliani/Rice in 08.

  1. Taranto talks about Giuliani here.

Key point (from the linked WaPo article):

"In the Republican race, former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who recently made clear his intentions to seek the presidency, has expanded his lead over Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Giuliani holds a 2 to 1 advantage over McCain among Republicans, according to the poll, more than tripling his margin of a month ago.

The principal reason was a shift among white evangelical Protestants, who now clearly favor Giuliani over McCain. Giuliani is doing well among this group of Americans despite his support of abortion rights and gay rights, two issues of great importance to religious conservatives. McCain opposes abortion rights."

Exactly what I've been saying all along.

  2. I like Giuliani but am afraid his record with his two ex-wives will put a big hole in his support. Especially the last one where he moved his mistress into the home while his wife was still there. He hasn't been a very nice or moral character and to some people a politicians personal life gets more regard than it should. I liked Clinton too and thought he was a good president and didn't care what was going on below his belt when he was on the phone with Arafat! Feel the same way about Giuliani.
