The Candidate

Will he run?

How will his supporters market him?

What will his enemies attempt to use against him?

What would his candidacy mean to his party?

What will it mean to the nation, especially if he wins?

  1. Bubba, I haven't seen anyone I like better being mentioned. But given the state of the world and the nature of the job only a fool would want to be President of the United States IMO! Maybe that's why there is a devastating shortage of intelligent, qualified persons willing to run. BB

The lefties will find lots to hate about Guiliani if he runs/wins. They usually do.

However, I think Guiliani is just the man to keep them toothless and docile, and therefore emasculated, so that they can't do any real damage.

  3. I think the fatal challenges to Rudy won't come from "the lefties," but from the anti-abortion and anti-gay elements of his own party, who will oppose him for his moderate views on those subjects, and who will dine out on the details of his messy divorce.

I also think Giuliani will not wear well as a candidate. He is thin-skinned and not very warm.

He did not wear well in NY, where after his very real and great successes he was an unpopular lame duck prior to 9/11. He deserves the acclaim he won for turning around many bad things in NY, and for his steadfastness after 9/11, and of course I agree with him on the aforementioned abortion and gay-rights issues...I just don't see him as a winner in GOP primaries, or a national election.

But that's what makes a horse race.

    I do.

The Republicans are not as dumb as the Dems have been in recent times when it comes to nominees for President. In modern times, they have learned to nominate candidates who can win.

With the exception of Bill Clinton, no Democratic nominee in almost a half century really qualified as a candidate who "could win", everything else being equal.

The myth of the anti-abortion/ anti-gay/fundamentalist/ Reactionary/Christian/Racists/Daddy Warbucks controlling the GOP is just that: a myth.

In addition, the GOP is much better at limiting issue "litmus tests" than the Democrats are.

Can anyone imagine an anti abortion Democrat getting the party's presidential nomination, no matter how "correct" he or she was on the rest of the issues?
