Obviously, better brakes, tires, steering, suspensions, seat belts, and air bags have made a difference. However,I am pretty sure I am correct in saying that the actual number of accidents per mile traveled has decreased too, and that has nothing to do with the improved vehicles.
I will see if I can find documentation that speaks to that issue.
Add traction control and stability control to the list of safety improvements.
One other point: All the vehicle safety improvements can't fix the lack of driver attention and/or lack of driver vehicle control issues, which are the major causes of crash sequence initiation.
