Fat chance of that working here. First, they'd want to hold a Forum on the Skid Row problem, which would promptly be canceled in the wake of black activists claiming it was a genocide program against blacks. Then, Mitch Johnson would cave in to the Simkins PAC and Joe Williams and discipline or fire the officers who tried to clean up Skid Row. The N&R would, of course, support Johnson's actions. Lorraine Ahearn would run a series of articles on how sad it was that the Skid Row bums weren't treated the same as everyone else, and how horrid it was that racist police officers controlled the GPD.
So many homeless advocates, or advocates for any group of the "less fortunate", wouldn't be caught dead actually speaking to one of these "unfortunate" human beings. They instead cover these "unfortunate" with a aura of sainthood and victimhood and advocate throwing more of our dollars at them. Of course these same people give themselves the lucrative positions of distributing these tax payer dollars. There have been some who have spoken out about these people who are so aggrieved over the homeless in Greensboro, but who have never met a homeless person, but their voices are quickly drowned out by a chorus of status quo.
And by no means should one ever ask a homeless person what they need or want themselves. No sireee. The indignant do-gooders "know" what is best for the homeless and mentally ill and drug users and you and me too. Just ask them!
And you are right Joe, Greensboro could learn from the experiences of LA but we won't because there isn't enough money in just enforcing laws to provide the basic need of a safe environment for these people. Neither is there the power and ego boosting afforded those squeaky clean advocates at their tax payer provided dinners where they applaud themselves and each other for their note worthy efforts on behalf of the down trodden.
Greensboro is in the throes of this misadventure right now. Some know the names of the culprits but if they stand up and denounce their activities they will simply get themselves branded as being not a team player and racists or worse, and pushed out.
Great article, Bubba, from which Greensboro can learn much.

Wouldn't it be appropriate to ask some questions about this issue of our new city council?
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be appropriate to suggest that some of the measures in the article could well benefit us here in Greensboro?
Why don't we ask our city to implement some of the things discussed?
Let's start keeping tabs of the responses to our questions on issues like this.
