Novak says he's for real.
Excerpt:
"Friends bet Thompson will run. He clearly wants to try, and his wife, Jeri, is all for it. Seeking the best timing, he wants to avoid the pitfalls encountered by Democrat Barack Obama, who may have damaged himself by starting his campaign too quickly."
I disagree with Novak on his assessment of Giuliani and the social conservatives however, and stand by my previous statement on that matter.
Bubba:
ReplyDeleteI think that Fred Thompson's entry into the race might have a big impact on Newt Gingrich and it may scare him off. It's my opinion that Fred and Newt appeal to the same sort of voters in the GOP.
The problem for Newt is that Thompson's "star power" is more recent than his.
I know that you prefer Giuliani over the other GOP candidates. What about McCain and Thompson? Do you like their positions on the issues? Their voting records seem to be pretty solid from a conservative viewpoint.
Is either one of the two your "second favorite?"
Wendell Sawyer
I don't particularly care for McCain, primarily because of his flawed campaign finance reform legislation and his less than stellar position on immigration.
ReplyDeleteI am also beginning to have my doubts that he could win the presidency.
Given the choice, I think I would prefer Thompson over McCain and Newt.
I would like to hear more from Thompson.
Bubba:
ReplyDeleteI think that we will be hearing much more from Fred Thompson.
At this point in time, I have a couple of reservations about him.
Does it appear to you that the liberal news media is giving Thompson a pass?
Wendell Sawyer
"Does it appear to you that the liberal news media is giving Thompson a pass?"
ReplyDeleteOnly until he decides to run and becomes a viable candidate.
Wendell, what are your reservations about Thompson?
ReplyDeleteI'm not confident that he can withstand the firestorm that will be unleashed on him by the national news media if he promotes a conservative agenda for the nation.
ReplyDeleteMost celebrated actors are usually careful in establishing their public persona so as to please the mainstream media. It's a matter of survival for actors since the rating game can make or break one's career in the entertainment industry.
Reagan had retired from acting long before he ran for president and those considerations weren't important to him at that time.
Thompson's stint as a television and movie actor is a current event. His instinct as an actor may cause him to avoid taking a strong stand on certain conservative issues for fear of stirring up a torrent of negative criticism from the liberal news media.
I just don't know. But, I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Wendell Sawyer
If Fred decides to run, I think he will choose to give up acting.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember him making any position compromises while he was in the senate.
I should have added "even if he is not nominated or not elected" at the end of the first sentence in the last post.
ReplyDeleteI like Fred Thompson but I'm afraid he may have a flaw that Bob Dole also had...advanced age.
ReplyDeleteIf Dole had been 20 years younger I think he would have had a much better shot.
I think voters are looking for a younger, more vibrant and active man for president.
McCain is not my favorite for one main reason: He has a short fuse and a quick temper. I'm not sure I want his finger on the button.
Jaycee, Fred's only 64 at this point. Hillary is 59, Giuliani 62,Romney 60, and Jon McCain is 70.
ReplyDeleteOnly Edwards (53) and Obama (45) are significantly younger.
Ronald Reagan was 69 when elected and inaugurated as President.
Well...Fred sure LOOKS a lot older than that to me, LOL.
ReplyDeleteJaycee,
ReplyDeleteLooks like he did alright back in 2002.
Bride and Groom
And a few years earlier when single he was doing the horizontal mambo with the younger and most attractive country singer Lori Morgan.
Hey, maybe Fred and Bob Dole can do a duo commercial for Viagra!!
ReplyDeleteLet me clarify my above post...I meant Fred THOMPSON.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue about Fred Gregory's sex life. Nor do I want one.
