Rich Galen's Musings on National security and Politics

Can be read here.

Key point (about the November elections):

  • But when they actually vote, they will decide that they might not like the people who are running things on Capitol Hill now, but the world is too dangerous a place to hand it over to a bunch of rookies whom they don't know, don't trust and, so, won't elect.
  • National security is a political issue. And it is not a plus for the Democrats.

  • As I have said several times before, watch how the Law of Unintended Consequences works against the Dems.

    1. "Do you predict that Dems will gain seats, but fewer than they otherwise would, or that they will neither gain nor lose seats, or do you think that the Dems will actually lose seats this fall?"

Depends on how well they get out the vote.

    2. I love this. Bubba is safeguarding himself *just* incase the Dems actually pick up seats. If they do, it will be because of illegals getting to defraud the government and vote, NOT because people want a change from the previous six years of a Washington run by inept, over-spending holier-than-thou Republicans.

Yep, way to cover your ass Bubba.

So you don't think that illegal aliens voting in elections is a problem?

You don't think there should be safeguards in place to prevent this from happening?

    4. I'm all for correcting voting irregularities, but as you are fond of saying to others, you "missed the point" I was trying to make.

Your post and response to Stew were attempting to make the point that you evidently believe that the only way Dems will pick up seats is if they "Get out the vote" ... of a flood of illegals to vote. Changing the electorate will require more than these people represent even if they ALL voted.

If there are changes, it will be because of things like this.

Well Roger, if you think that, you would be evidentiarily wrong.

It's just one example of "getting out the vote". There are many others, in ways not intended originally.

The "Law of Unintended Consequences" says that any election sucess enjoyed by the Dems will probally be subject to a backlash as a result of the eventual realization that there's a big gap between what they said, and what they did.

This eventuality may easily result in consquences not forseen, which could cause the boomerang effect to occur.

The 1980 presidential election comes to mind. Our nation turned out much the better for that happy result.

    7. The public has never been known to "change horses in the middle of the river". There is too much going on in the world that is on the brink of blowing and the public knows it. The government can not be shaken up and distracted now. Maybe in '08, but not now. The public isn't that upset because things are good here at home. 4% unemployment, stock market stable, there just isn't but one issue and that is Iraq and as I said, people won't trust a new bunch to know what is going on. 8. That might have been true in '04 BB, but I don't think you can say the same thing now. Much more is known now about what is going on in this country and in Iraq. Bush will still be in charge after November's elections, but he may have to actually listen to the majority will of the people. You know the 60+% of us that disagree with how the war (and the country) is being dealt with.

Then again, people may sit back and not vote for change and let more people die, more freedoms be eroded, see the deficit get larger and larger, see spending go unchecked (as it has for the last 6 years), see science continue to be silenced, and watch Bin Laden issue more and more video tapes threatening us because Bush and Co. can't seem to find him. I'm personally not getting my hopes up this time around. You guys have been in control of every branch of government for a decade now and seem to think everything is fine and dandy, so perhaps the majority of the people in this country will think so too.

I tend to doubt it though.
