"Beyond Gay Marriage"

A thought provoking article from the Weekly Standard.

Noteworthy excerpt::

"The stated goal of these prominent gay activists is no longer merely the freedom to live as they want. Rather, it is to force you, your family, and the state to recognize and respect their myriad choices. The result of meeting these demands will be a culture, a legal system, and a government that considers a monogamous, exclusive, permanent sexual relationship of child-bearing and child-rearing nothing more than one among many lifestyle choices. The claim that marriage is normative for the flourishing of spouses, children, and society--not to mention any attempt to enshrine in law this unique human good--would be considered bigotry. In other words, marriage as a social institution would be destroyed. "

  1. The Cultural Elites don't care, Joe. They, and they alone, know what's "best" and "fair" and "just" and "moral" and "right" for our society.

    According to them, decisions of that nature should never be left to the Great Unwashed of Us.

  2. You didn't read the entire post, and therefore missed the writer's point, didn't you, Stew?

    Try again. This time, with patience, before you make another comment like that.

  3. The ideas in that "statement" or "manifesto" are NOT WIDELY accepted by LGBT people. The folks who created and signed that manifesto, believe it or not, have been, effectivly, ignored. That is not what LGBT people want... the thought's in the "activists' statement" is nothing but the ramblings of loony-bins and the conservatives and the right is now trying to spin it and make it look like this is what "all gay people and activists" want for marriage.

    I did two posts on this topic a while back actually:
    Radical queers and Marriage equality & a giant freak flag

    No, the idea is to illustrate the Balknization of the movement. It's similar to what the NutRoots want to do with the Democratic Party, as evidenced by their fiasco in Connecticut.

  5. No seriously Bubba. Just one or two days after this "Beyond Marriage" crap came out, groups like Focus on the Family and others issued statements to the tone of "Gay activists announce true intentions for marriage." Their releases also made it sound as though this was something from the gay community as a whole, when their releases should have said it was only a few of the most liberal, left-wing people. They are painting this as what "gays really want" and it isn't true.

  6. This may have come from a fringe element, but it's newsworthy never the less. It's folly to try to pretend it doesn't exist.

    If these people are successful in taking control, or gaining a larger visability in general, like the Kos Krowd hopes to do with the Democratic Party, it will be disasterous for those who want to promote the LGBT issues.

  7. This quote from one of the links Matt provided earlier is spot on in its evaluation:

    "....the average American voter will be even less receptive to the permanent revolution implied by these counterculturists who emphasize differences rather than common values, victimhood rather than inner strength, and entitlement rather than responsibility. Demanding equal legal status for every conceivable type of relationship, including polyamory, is a strategy for permanent outsider status."

    That is the Balkanization I was talking about.
